Sheath Martial Art
Question for anyone who has trained with the katanas?
As part of my martial arts training, my Grandmaster introduced Haedong Gumdo to us as black belt level. He told us that when you draw the sword, it’d be a good idea to place the sheath to your back, so you slide it along the belt. The reason why was so that it didn’t get in the way when you were swinging the sword. I have two questions:
1) Do you do the same thing?
2) Did the Samurai do the same thing? (This is just curiosity)
That was one variation to configuring the sheathe to the body. I use the most common samurai configuration for the two swords: left hip.
There are different methods, like in iaido, to tying the sheathe to the side so that movement is less restricted.
